Core Promise

Roleplaying should make sense.

Characters should not gain powers simply because a number changed on a sheet. In Adventurers' Song, growth happens because something happened in the story.

Why did this happen?

You set the direction; the rules follow your story. Your talents, study, survival, vows, relationships, discoveries, and consequences all spark advancement.

How did it happen?

Everything is a skill. Skills combine powerfully. Reactions, tactics, research, use, instruction and story events are all skill driven.

What changes because of it?

Cause-effect governs. Play affects reputations, alignment, debts, standing, injuries, secrets, relationships, and world state.

At The Table

Easy for new players. Powerful for Game Masters.

For players

Put your story first, let the rules follow. Declare what you want to do, and why it makes sense. Roll, and resolve. You now know how to start playing; but real power comes from combining skills and deep tactics.

For Game Masters

Quickly create richer storylines and watch them become permanent memories. Story arcs guide players. Consequences teach them. Everything matters, and everything makes sense. If you are a good GM, prepare to be great.

A Better System

Skills are the engine.

A skill can be a sword technique, spell, language, ritual, profession, combat tactic, reputation, alignment, attribute, or something entirely unique to your character. The question is not whether it is listed in a book. The question is whether it makes sense. Skills start out simple, but as you learn more of them, and learn how to truly wield them, you will achieve dominion over rich narrative, deep tactics, and exciting game play.

World Lore

Magic is not a menu.

Who are you, really? Energy sources are story sources. Arcane study, divine gifts, primordial attunement, psionic will, infinite contact, and forbidden transgression each ask different questions of the character...and the player. Choose wisely.

Physical

Body, stamina, reflex, and all life's non-magical skills. Tactically powerful and complex. Lots of utility.

Arcane

Study manipulation through pattern, force, sign, and structure. Awesome power...for a bookworm.

Divine

Advance a Deity's agenda and be rewarded with Deity-specific powers. Only true believers need apply.

Primordial

Element, stone, season, weather, beast, and living world. Channel the living energy all around you.

Psionic

Mind, will, memory, dream, time, and perception. Develop your natural gifts.

Forbidden

Power gained by theft, profane act, coercion, or unshielded breach. But was it worth the price?

Depth Mode

Simple at the table. Complete under the hood.

A few rules make a game easy to learn. Deeper rules make mastery rewarding. Adventurers' Song is layered: beginners start with a simple foundation, while master tacticians can explore and theorycraft for a lifetime. Here, you min-max by developing your story.

Living History

Remember that time when...?

It is the crime of the century. Countless great but fleeting moments spent playing tabletop roleplaying games with friends have been lost to history. The epic victories and crushing failures; the betrayals, revelations, and moral choices; the grudges, the laughs, the divine favor... they should not vanish the moment the session ends. This is the single largest failure of the hobby. And it ends here, with Adventurers' Song.

  1. Session 1A stranger arrives.
  2. Session 4A vow is sworn.
  3. Session 9A secret is revealed.
  4. Session 15A reputation is won.
  5. LaterA war, myth, or era is remembered.
